THE CHEMISTRY OF LIGHT
Life can be complicated. We spend our days working, caring for family and friends, keeping up with hobbies, responsibilities, and appointments — while time seems to slip away faster and faster. Yet, every now and then, we experience moments that remind us of how simple life once felt — when we were children.
Moments when we rediscover how fascinating nature is, and how beautiful
life can be. Moments that prove time can, in fact, stand still for a while.
We all know that feeling — looking up at the night sky as children, watching
the stars, the soft flicker of a campfire reflecting on the world around us.
When the simplest things still held a sense of wonder.
This sense of wonder is what inspired The Chemistry of Light.
The Chemistry of Light is an audiovisual installation created to recapture the magic of those childhood moments. The concept was to create powerful, emotional effects using the simplest possible materials — a broken mirror and a beamer —
to illuminate an entire room with ethereal, organic movements. A place where a projection on one’s own body could appear infinite through reflection, and where small boxes could open portals into entirely new worlds.
The Chemistry of Light was presented as my final examination project and a one-week exhibition in 2016. It has since been published in The Desire of the Medium by Marc Boumeester.
